Here's a question, purely because I never saw either play live. Bobby or Beckenbauer?

I'm trying really hard to, but I just can't seem able to imagine the likes of Billy Bonds being ripped apart by the likes of Raheem Sterling ?? No, I can't make it happen!!

absolute horse shit. billy bonds, even without sports science and modern training methods would easily transition in the modern game and match up to current players, most of which are pansies in comparison

You're completely ignoring the fact that those players from that time with those skills would also benefit from the sports science, nutrition, tactical ability, endurance, speed etc that modern players do.

How on earth can you not grasp that?

You really are the thickest of the fucking thick, sixty.

I don't think a player needs to be part of a World/European Cup winning team to be the GOAT. Georgie Best was never going to win a cup with Northern Ireland.

Platini, genius of a player. Shame the path he took.

Re: The Greatest Of All Time (GOAT)
It is very difficult to compare players from different eras, and in different positions.

Messi is definitely one of the greatest, but is he any better than Iniesta? He made Barca tick and also scored a winning World Cup final goal. I could watch him all day. Maradona was a genius. Maldini was the perfect defender.

I'd argue that Bobby Moore was almost always fitter than Kurt Zouma is now.

Even after a heavy night's drinking with Jimmy Greaves.

Souness is often just salty.
In no other sport would you genuinely say that the players of before would beat the players of now.

Sports science, nutrition, tactical ability, endurance, speed etc are all better with modern athletes in pretty much all sports. Why is football any different?

Relatively against other players yes the old players were amazing. But against todays players they’d be ripped apart.

And just because the modern player can’t play the game unless the pitches are perfect etc. that’s a silly argument. The old player may be able to perform better on the newer pitches but they also were not as good atheletes as the new players. So I still think they would lose.

The reality is the skill they posses would not be able to be seen so easily because the newer players speed and athleticism would cancel it out. The life styles of the old players would mean they just wouldn’t make the grade for modern football, regardless of nice pitches and less bad tackles.

All the smoking, drinking, late night partying, bad diets etc. souness is having a laugh.
the modern game is about more than technique on the ball.

Rivaldo was a cunt, if only for faking injury to his face when the ball never went anywhere near his fat fucking face.

Fat Ronaldo by a mile better than that cunt

Someone I've not seen mentioned on this thread yet is Rivaldo.

Says something about how good fat Ronaldo was, because Rivaldo is definitely one of the best of all time and Ronaldo outshone him.

Re: The Greatest Of All Time (GOAT)
To say players from back in the day couldn't play today because of the fitness levels has to be one of the most un-educated, idiotic things anyone has ever said about the game.

Takashi Miike 2:54 Sun Nov 27
Re: The Greatest Of All Time (GOAT)
totally disagree that players from years ago wouldn't dominate now. what separated the greats was speed of thought, something 90% of modern players lack. peak maradona, with the extra protection given to modern day forwards would be unplayable

Re: The Greatest Of All Time (GOAT)
The 'current game is too fast' view. I heard Souness interviewed (who generally I can't stand) and he said something that to me made sense.

He said the question is backward. Could any of the current crop have succeeded in the 80s when balls, boots and pitches were all far far less refined.

And I agree with him. The game is faster because it can be. Good players can always play better in better conditions...players brought up in good conditions adapting to less optimal conditions? Less certain.

Re: The Greatest Of All Time (GOAT)
I don’t think many of the greats back in the day would make it in this era to be fair. Part of what made them so good is that everyone had more time on the ball. You just won’t get that in modern top flight football.

Everyone who plays now is like a top athlete as well as a footballer. Looking at it that way Messi is probably the best player of all time. As he’s been doing this against the fittest atheletes ever.

Re: The Greatest Of All Time (GOAT)
Maradona by far. The defences in Série A in late 80s/90s are as good as today. Maldini, Berasi etc . Very organised line up sometimes with a sweeper yet he traumatised them. He could play today no problem on the level of Messi, Ronaldo. Pelé, Garincha, Eusebio etc no way .

Far Cough 2:20 Sun Nov 27
Re: The Greatest Of All Time (GOAT)
Pele will always be O Rei (The King) for me

Came on the scene at the 1958 WC and all the subsequent WCs until the 1970 Cup where he was possibly the player of the tournament. The only WC he didn't excel in was the 1966 one because he was kicked to fuck

Eerie Descent 2:01 Sun Nov 27
Re: The Greatest Of All Time (GOAT)
Interesting take that, arsene. I never saw Pele play, but from someone that did, him being strong in all those facets could mean he is the best?

I think of someone like Ruud Gullit, he doesn't seem to ever come up in the greatest of all time debate, but he'd be world class in every position on the pitch. Full back, centre back, centre mid, on the wing, or up front. Arguably the most complete footballer of all time?
